Ford had a lock on most races in 1965 as Chrysler was boycotting the series over regulations concerning their 426 Hemi engine. General Motors did not compete in any official capacity from 1957 until 1977.
Ford tried a similar boycott the following year after NASCAR had disallowed the 427 SOHC engine they'd developed to compete with the Hemi. By then though, fans were tired of politicking and just wanted to see their favorite cars and drivers go head-to-head. Ford returned to the sport fairly quickly.
