Compact, yes. Probably not a luxury car considering that the cost of the top level Custom 4-door sedan was a few dollars less than a comparable Chevrolet Impala, which had a two inch longer wheelbase. The 1961 Ambassador had quirky front end styling as well, reminiscent of some Ford concept cars.
