Auto Union 1000 Coupe de Luxe

The condensed version of the story is that in 1928 there was Audi, then they merged with three other companies in 1932 to become Auto Union. Then there was a big war. Then the Soviets took over the factory in 1948 and built Trabants, so a new Auto Union was formed in West Germany.  Then Mercedes-Benz bought them in 1959, then they sold it to VW who revived the Audi name in 1965.  Then there's some intrigue surrounding the 1968 Audi 100, which made the company what it is today.  But I digress.

This brochure pertains to the Mercedes-Benz period, 1959 or 1960.  There was a brief time when many European auto companies were playing the US market trying to get in on some of that sweet VW Beetle action. Datsun and Toyota were in there too. DKW and Auto Union, both part of the same company, tried and failed to make any inroads.  It may look odd now, but the Auto Union arguably was the best looking German car of that period aside from a Mercedes-Benz. But it (and DKW) was hampered by having only two stroke engines.
