Julius Caesar and Vespasian - Modern Imitation

Roman Imperial, Julius Caesar (49 - 44 BCE) and Vespasian (69 - 79 CE), Modern Imitation of a Sestertius

  • Obverse DIVI IVLI - Laureate bust of Julius Caesar right with Lituus behind and legend to right
  • Reverse: Front view of the Temple of Jupiter Capitolinus, depicting six columns on a podium of four steps; between the columns are statues of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva; S C in exergue

Reference:

  • Klawans Julius Caesar 5 (Obverse)
  • Cf. BMC 721 Vespasian (Reverse)

Other Information:

This coin imitates the style of Giovani Cavino (1500 – 1570) but is a modern fantasy piece as no coins of this type were produced during the Roman era.  The obverse copies Klawans 5 for Julius Caesar.  The reverse is copied from a Sestertius of Vespasian.   It is a modern fake, possibly a 19th century "grand tour" fake, but more likely a post WW II era tourist fake.
