Mazda 1800 The Leading Lady

Unlike every other Mazda sold in America at the time, this car could only be had with a piston engine.  It was available as a four door sedan and station wagon and was the largest car they offered, with an 1800cc 98hp motor.  You could buy it in manual & automatic.  For the US, a bench seat was available which moved the four speed to the steering column.

This was a terrific looking car with Bertone styling but it failed to sell and was pulled after two years.  Mazda apparently decided the problem was the engine and replaced it with the RX-4 in 1973.
