In August 2008, automotive fans and car enthusiasts began a cross-country trek to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Hot Wheels brand. The grass roots effort kicked off at Mattel headquarters in El Segundo, California, with the caravan of fans growing larger at each stop as the convoy made its way east across the country. With visits at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Speed (Kansas), Indianapolis, and Detroit, the epic road trip culminated with a grand finale celebration on September 5th in Watkins Glen, New York, the birthplace of American road racing.
These commemorative Custom Otto cars were distributed at each of the stops on the 40th anniversary road trip.
