Action Man was introduced by Palitoy in 1966 (under licence from Hasbro Inc. who had first introduced the toy in America as "GI Joe" in 1964). They aimed to rival Pedigree's Tommy Gunn and indeed, Action Man proved to be the most popular doll of its kind, and has since become highly collectable. 

Action Man was produced with various hair colourings, and further modifications such as gripping hands and eagle eyes. Altogether, over 36 different body variations were made. Numerous detailed outfits were designed for the dolls, including all the uniforms of the British regiments, and those of the American, Russian and German armies.
