The Brooklyn Bridge is a hybrid cable-stayed and suspension bridge in New York City, United States of America. Opened on May 24, 1883, it was the first fixed crossing of the East River between the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. It was also the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time it opened, with a main span of 1,595.5 feet (486.3 meters). With its distinct neo-Gothic stone towers and elevated pedestrian promenade, the Brooklyn Bridge has been a major tourist attraction from its inception and has become an internationally recognized symbol of New York City.
