The Brooklyn Nets are an American basketball franchise founded in 1967 as the New Jersey Americans. The Americans lasted one year under that name before moving to New York and becoming the Nets, where they'd go on to win two American Basketball Association (ABA) championships in 1974 and 1976 powered by hall of fame small forward Julius "Dr. J." Erving.
The Nets joined the National Basketball Association beginning with the 1977-78 season, making a return to New Jersey. They'd go on to win six division titles and a pair of conference titles (2002, 2003) behind the likes of Jason Kidd, Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson.
