Chaos was formed in 1992 by Sony Music Entertainment as "A Dimension of Columbia Records" (according to label copy). Although Chaos was home to various rock, hip-hop, dance, and Reggae artists on its own, its greatest prominence was its position as the sub-distributor of several Def Jam/RAL catalog titles from 1992 to 1994 when Sony's stake in Def Jam was purchased by PolyGram.
