Classic Space is a LEGO theme that was introduced in 1978. This featured a group of peaceful explorers with no rival space antagonists.

Classic Space also introduced new pieces and building techniques that had never been seen in LEGO. Also unique to this series was a brick with the set number on it for the larger spaceships. These sets had the first astronaut minifigs, all without visors on their helmets.

There are 5 astronaut (spaceman) minifigures included in the Classic Space theme, each color meant to represent a space specialisation:

  1. Black (spy)
  2. Blue (solider/security)
  3. Red (pilot/explorer)
  4. White (pilot/explorer)
  5. Yellow (scientist)

In 2014, green astronauts were introduced in a LEGO Ideas set. These included new facial expressions and helmet visors. They were also given names - Yve and Pete.

      6. Green (Mech pilot)

Also in 2014, a new blue astronaut, named Benny, was introduced for the LEGO Movie film. This minifigure has an intentionally faded space logo on his chest and a cracked helmet strap to represent what typically happened to most Classic Space spacemen from the wear and tear due to play. He also has an updated expression, often with 2 options on each side of the head.

Then in 2019, for the release of the LEGO Movie 2 film, Benny was re-released with new expressions and came with friends—Jenny (white), Kenny (yellow) and Lenny (new pink color). These friends come with the typical Classic Space head and are have the same look as the original Classic Space series minifigures.

      7. Pink (medical)

In 2020, the book LEGO Minifigure: A Visual History was published and included an orange astronaut minifigure.

      8. Orange (miner)

In 2023, a brown astronaut was introduced in the LEGO minifigures series 24.  He comes with a baby astronaut in a blue spaceman outfit.

      9.  Brown (TBD)

Officially, there are 9 colors for the Classic Space astronauts. However, a grey colored version has made the rounds but is not an officially released LEGO minifigure.  And in 2021, a purple color astronaut surfaced. These minifigs are made up from genuine LEGO parts - there is a LEGO body in gray and in purple that has the Classic Space logo on the chest and from there one can replace the hands, legs, head and helmet to create the look. The grey version can also include an airtank. Unfortunately for the purple astronaut, LEGO has never made a purple airtank so he is supplied with a color from a fellow spaceman. There are a number of articles providing details on how to assemble these two minifigures from other LEGO character parts.

Unofficial spacemen (made from various official LEGO parts):

  1. Grey (cadet) - unofficial, created by fans.
  2. Purple (mechanic) - unofficial, created by fans.
