Countess Elizabeth Junek is regarded by many as the greatest female driver in Grand Prix history. Junek was born in Moravia, in which is now known as the Czech Republic. She got her start racing as a mechanic to her husband. She first jumped behind the wheel in 1923 after a hand injury sustained in World War I prevented her husband from shifting gears. She competed equally among the men for the next five years, but left racing in 1928 after her husband was killed in a wreck at the 1928 German Grand Prix.
