Emilio Materassi was an Italian Grand Prix driver who worked closely with Alfieri Maserati in the 1920s. In 1928 he claimed the Grand Prix of Mugello. His life was tragically cut short after he lost control on the 17th lap of the 1928 Italian Grand Prix and crashed into the grandstand. The accident killed Materassi, as well as 22 spectators, making it the second-worst accident ever recorded at a Grand Prix event.
