It was created after World War II as the European Coal and Steel Community in 1951 with six member states evolving into the European Economic Community in 1958 and, with the 1993 Maastricht Treaty, the European Union. It became an international legal person in 2009 with the Treaty of Lisbon.

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, and Sweden. 

The United Kingdom, the only member state to ever the leave the EU, was a member from 1973-2020.
