From 1945 to 1993 each Dutch municipality with 25,000 or more inhabitants had its own municipal police force: the "Gemeentepolitie". Next to the "Gemeentepolitie" there was the national police "Rijkspolitie", which patrolled the highways and served as police force for municipalities with less than 25,000 inhabitants. In 1993 both police forces were re-organized. Refer to the Subject "Politie".
