Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county located in North West England. It is bordered by Cheshire, Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Merseyside. The county comprises 10 metropolitan boroughs, including the cities of Manchester and Salford. Although most of the county is part of the historic county of Lancashire, parts of four boroughs belong to the historic county of Cheshire, and part of the borough of Oldham is in the historic county of Yorkshire2. The county spans 493 square miles (1,277 km2) and is landlocked, but connected to the sea by the Manchester Ship Canal
