Brooks was the former sales manager for Marthonmotors and the Herff bothers were the Indianapolis distributors for the company. In addition to its distributing the Marthons, they also built some. When Marthon shut down, Herff and Brooks began to manufacture them in Indianapolis under the Herff-Brooks name.

They soon found out to their sorrow, it was no more popular in the midwest than it was in the south and Herrf-Brooks went out of business in 1917.
