Agrippa II became an unpopular ruler. His subjects didn’t approve of his Hellenistic lifestyle, alleged abuse of his authority over the priesthood, and his insensitivity toward to Jewish religious issues. Rumors was engaged in an incestuous relationship with his sister, Berenice, made matters worse.
In 65 CE he tried to prevent a revolt against Rome but had to flee Jerusalem in 66 CE when the first Jewish war broke out. During the war, he proved his loyalty to Rome by providing troops to help fight the rebels. He also joined the future emperor Titus on some campaigns and was wounded in one of the battles. After the rebels were defeated, Agrippa II went to Rome where he was rewarded for his loyalty with the title Preator and additional lands. He is believed to have attended Vespasian’s coronation while there. After returning to his kingdom, he continued to rule for more than 25 years until his death.
The most accepted date for Agrippa II’s death, which comes from the historian Josephus, is 92/93 CE. However, this is uncertain. A lead bulla has been found with an inscription marking his 43rd regnal year (97/98 CE) and a later historian places his death in the year 100. After his death, his territories were incorporated into the Roman Empire.
