Horse racing is an equestrian performance sport, typically involving two or more horses ridden by jockeys or driven without riders. It is one of the most ancient of all sports, as its basic premise – to identify which of two or more horses is fastest over a set course or distance – has been unchanged for centuries.
Horse races vary widely in format and are regulated by an assortment of national and regional governing bodies. Many countries have developed their own particular traditions around the sport. Variations include restricting races to particular breeds, or running over obstacles, over different distances, on different track surfaces, or in different gaits. In some races, horses are assigned different weights to carry to reflect differences in ability, a process known as handicapping.

The annual high point of horse racing in the United States is the Kentucky Derby, held on the first Saturday in May at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky. The Derby is followed two weeks later by the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland, which is followed three weeks later by the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park on Long Island, New York. Together these three races form the famed Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing for three-year-olds.
