Iron Man (Anthony 'Tony' Edward Stark)

Iron Man, AKA Anthony 'Tony' Stark, is one of Marvel's most popular characters. Born a genius, Tony Stark created the Iron Man suit after being injured in Afghanistan by a landmine. He was captured and taken prisoner by terrorists who wanted the genius to create them a weapon. Unfortunately shrapnel from the landmine had stayed in his chest, inching towards his heart. Using the pieces he found in the lab he was being kept prisoner, Stark fashioned his first suit of armor, complete with a chestpiece that worked to keep him alive despite the shrapnel. Stark is often portrayed as a "playboy-genius-billionaire-philanthropist" when not in the Iron Man suit (of which he makes numerous variations). The Iron Man suit is neigh indestructible, armed with lasers, missiles, and air-tight seals, allowing him to travel in space and underwater.
