On the planet Mercan, there are no stars, no moon, no outer space…
The citizens of Mercan cannot conceive of worlds beyond their own. Their sun, Mercaniad, is prone to deadly, radioactive flare-ups, and the Mercans have organized their lives around the need to survive The Ordeal – until a strange visitor appears from out of nowhere…
The USS Enterprise, badly crippled and in desperate need of repairs, must seek help from a people who cannot believe in its existence. Mercaniad is about to blow, and James Kirk faces an impossible choice: to attack the sun itself and save his ship and crew – or let a people live in peace, in the only world they know… the abode of life.

The Hawking left Earth during the 21st century on a one-way mission to colonize a distant world. Due to the relativistic effects of pre-warp travel, its crew has aged only thirty years while two centuries passed outside the ship. When the starship Enterprise comes to the rescue of the malfunctioning Hawking, the colonists find themselves thrust into a universe and an era that has left them behind.
Captain Kirk intends to help the colonists adjust as best he can, but the task is not a simple one. The newcomers are survivors of a more violent, more paranoid time – and they have brought old suspicions, and an ancient weapon of mass destruction, into a world of unexpected challenges and dangers.

FOR THE RECORD - James Kirk was the first starship captain to stand trial for causing the death of another Starfleet officer, for which he was exonerated. He ordered the destruction of the U.S.S. Enterprise to prevent its capture by Klingons, and faced nine violations of Starfleet regulations assoclated with this incedent [sic] in 2285. However, he was found guilty of only one; disobeying a superior officer. He was also wrongly convicted (along with Dr. McCoy) for the murder of Chancellor Gorkon in 2293.
