Jouef

Brand

Something Missing?

French manufacturer of various kinds of model trains and model cars, among them slot cars in 1/36 scale, some of which were also produced and sold in the UK by Mettoy-Corgi under the Playcraft brand.

Founded in 1944, Jouef first produced model railway items, branching out into 1/87 scale plastic model cars from 1955 onward. Those model cars were mostly marketed as accessories for the company's model railway layouts and continued into the 1970s, with the final issues becoming much simpler and less realistic than their predecessors.

In the 1990s Jouef also made diecast metal model cars for collectors in the usual collector scales of 1/43, 1/24 and 1/18, using the brand name "Jouef Evolution". During that time period production was transferred from France to China.

Jouef went bankrupt in 2004 and was subsequently taken over by Hornby Hobbies. The brand continues as a subsidiary of Hornby Railways, nowadays only comprising model railway items.
