Kmart stores hosted Hot Wheels collector events 3-4 times a year from 2004 to 2019. During these events, collectors would have the opportunity to open sealed cases of 72 (later 36) Hot Wheels Mainline cars, including special re-colors that were only distributed in the cases specially prepared for the events. Treasure Hunt cars could sometimes also be found in the cases, which contributed to the appeal of the events.

The June 17, 2007 event (near Father's Day) was canceled and the cars that were meant to be event exclusives (silver '70 Pontiac Firebird, green Slideout, and light blue Blast Lane) were distributed normally at Kmart stores and some other retailers.
