The United States annexed the Oklahoma Territory on Nov. 16, 1907, making it the 46th state to join the union. Oklahoma derives its "Sooner State" moniker from the early settlers who grabbed land prior to opening of the Indians Appropriation Act of 1889.
Today, Oklahoma is home to more than 3.9 million residents, some 500,000 of which live in its capital and largest municipality Oklahoma City.
