Finding Warlock and Maya in the throes of passion, the rest of the Watch quickly deduce that Maya's wine was some sort of mystic love potion. After confirming with the help of Doctor Druid that no earthly magic can break the spell, Warlock desperately ponders his options until Count Abyss attacks the castle with a horde of demons. Abyss takes Maya away in the chaos, leaving Warlock determined to find a way to get her back.

Warlock consults the Orb of Eternity for information on Count Abyss. The Orb grants him a vision of Abyss' origin as an ambitious archeologist that sought and found the long-lost Zalkor, a powerful but immobile god that granted one unlimited wishes in exchange for their soul and the service of feeding him his addictively narcotic skrimblatt. Abyss used the power of Zalkor to conquer his home dimension and now seeks Warlock's Soul Gem to restore the one thing he had to give up. Armed with the knowledge of Abyss' homeworld, Warlock uses Pip's teleportation ability to transport the Infinity Watch to the outskirts of Abyss' fortress. They believe they have the element of surprise on their side, but as soon as they arrive, someone else is already standing behind them.

Warlock thinks the apparition he keeps seeing is an hallucination resulting from his longing for Maya until it finally comes into focus as Firelord, who tells the story that he was brooding on an alien world when a friendly man approached him and tore out his life force as soon as he granted him his trust. Agreeing to help, Warlock takes Firelord's ghost into the Soul Gem and then has Pip teleport the Infinity Watch to the location of the killer as his image was provided through Firelord's memories. They end up in Pittsburgh and the killer tries to run away at first, but when cornered reveals himself as Zakaius, executioner of sinners. He says that Warlock has been marked for death and unleashes his mystic might to battle the Watch. When one of Zakaius' stray energy bolts accidentally ignites a fuel truck, he suddenly stops, horrified at what he's done. Meanwhile on the alien world of Luarei, the locals discover the corpse of Firelord and believe he resembles ancient royalty, leading them to prepare the appropriate funeral rites.

After witnessing the Infinity Watch rescuing the innocent people he endangered with his explosion, Zakaius comes to believe that it was wrong to target them as sinners and doubts his mission. He explains to them his task to take the life force runes from his victims and deliver them to his Lord, Domitian. If they want Firelord's life force back, they will have to go see Domitian in person. Zakaius mystically transports the Infinity Watch to Domitian's world, but the aged and feeble religious leader has no interest in hearing Zakaius' appeal. The team is forced to fight past Domitian's bodyguard, Kaef, as well as a small army of automated cyborg slaves. Finally, Domitian taps into his hoard of life force runes to grow to hulking proportions and enters the fray himself. Meanwhile on Luarei, the locals attempt to cremate Firelord's remains.

During the battle with Domitian, Moondragon scans his mind to determine the secret of his strength. Zakaius and the Watch realize he's using the life force runes as fuel and every moment of effort consumes a life that could otherwise be restored. Domitian blasts Moondragon in retaliation, nearly killing her and setting Drax off in a rage in response. Warlock tries to make Drax calm down and directs the battle to avoid engaging Domitian directly in an effort to slow down his consumption of runes. Pip and Zakaius teleport into the control room to find a way to sever the link, but they have to get through Kaef first. Pip gives Kaef the runaround until he notices Domitian about to attack Warlock outside, then teleports Kaef into the path of the blast, stunning Domitian when he realizes he killed his own bodyguard. Zakaius then destroys Domitian's machines, causing him to revert to his helpless gaunt form. Afterwards, Zakaius agrees to take on the task of restoring the life force runes to the victims that he can, starting with Firelord. Warlock transfers Firelord's soul to his rune, causing it to fly off to return to his body. Meanwhile on Luarei, the locals are astonished to find that Firelord's body was completely undamaged by his funeral bier and come to believe he is actually a god. They entomb the body and the child that first found the body keeps the staff as a holy relic. When Firelord's soul returns, it possesses the staff first, which flies towards the tomb, drawing the attention of the child and the other locals. When Firelord is resurrected and flies off into the heavens, they believe they are witnessing an incredible miracle.
