The Dutch "Politie" (Police) in its current form exists since 2013. It consists of 10 regional units and 1 national support unit. (The latter, previously was called "KLPD" (Korps Landelijke Politiediensten).
From 1945 to 1993 each Dutch municipality with 25,000 or more inhabitants had their own police force, called "Gemeentepolitie". In the smaller municipalities the police duties were performed by the national police "Rijkspolitie", which also watched over the highways. In 1993 these 2 police organisations were merged into 1 police force, just called "Politie", but still with 25 regional units and 1 national unit. (That national unit was more or less the successor of the "Rijkspolitie" and was called "Korps Landelijke Politiediensten" (= "KLPD"). In 2013 the regions of the "Politie" were reduced from 25 to 10 larger ones.
