Founded by Heinz and Elfriede Rössler in 1960 Salzburg, the Austrian manufacturer Roco originally created plastic models of military vehicles. They soon diversified into model railways in varying scales, including 1/45, 1/66 and 1/87. Between 1980 and 2001, Roco offered civilian cars and trucks based off its existing military models, before returning to railways and military vehicles. Through the years, Roco has also partnered under the brands Modelleisenbahn GmbH and Peetzy.
