Ryu Asada (1978-2021) was a die-cast car designer who worked at Mattel from 2004 until his death from colorectal cancer on 23 March 2021 in California. He was born in Osaka, Japan and attended the ArtCenter College of Design after emigrating to the United States. After graduating in 2004 he began working for Mattel as a designer for Matchbox. In 2012 he officially moved to the Hot Wheels team after first designing for them in 2009. Ryu oversaw design of cars in the basic $1 lineup.
