Salute to Petty was a 2004 series of promotional Hot Wheels cars that were included in General Mills cereals and other food products. Each car was based on either a NASCAR driven by Richard Petty or a contemporary General Mills-sponsored Petty Enterprises car. The cars all had a "Salute to Petty" logo with Richard Petty's silhouette on the trunk lid, with the exception of the 1984 Pontiac Grand Prix, which had the logo on the hood.
Two VW Drag Bus models linked to this promo were available by mail, one with Lucky Charms decoration and the other with Wheaties decoration.

This casting was designed by Phil Reihlman and first released in 1996. It is based on a Volkswagen T1 Transporter panel van, with the T1 body mounted on a drag racer chassis. The body is hinged at the front of the chassis and can tip forward to reveal a driver seat in a roll cage and a massive engine mounted in the center. A large tailpipe extends out the back of the vehicle.
The Drag Bus is one of the heaviest Hot Wheels castings. Due in part to its weight, the 1996 First Editions release was only time it has been issued as a basic Mainline model. The casting has been popular as a "premium" release, often with rubber "Real Riders" tires. It has also been popular with customizers, who make use of the large flat surfaces to add artwork.
There are a few other versions of the VW Drag Bus, including one with windows and a monster truck.
