Staropramen is a beer brand AND the second largest Czech brewery with an output of over 3 million hl per year.
The brewery was founded in 1869 as a joint stock brewery in Prague, where a modern brewery was built according to plans by the engineer Gustav Noback. From 1871 beer was brewed and sold, in 1911 the brand name "Staropramen" (literally: "Alte Quelle") was registered. František Tichý, an artist of the Czech avant-garde, designed the logo for the brewery. After the Second World War, the company was confiscated and nationalized. In 1989, after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, it was converted into a stock corporation with foreign investment capital.

From 1993 the British group Bass was the majority shareholder with 80 percent. Bass was taken over by InBev in 2000. In December 2009, AB InBev sold parts of the brewery business in Central and Eastern Europe to the private equity firm CVC Capital Partners, which the resulting group called StarBev. In some countries, including Germany, AB InBev has reserved the right to brew and sell Staropramen itself. In 2012, StarBev was again taken over by the North American brewery group Molson Coors. Today the brewery is in the Prague districtSmíchov Headquarters of Molson Coors Europe. In mid-2019, the Staropramen brewery took over 89% of the shares in the Pardubický brewery.
