Founded by David Roots, The Essence Of The Car is a different concept in the presentation of scale model vehicles. Instead of the high level of detail usually found in diecast ranges, these models present the vehicles in their basic form. All are made to the standard collector’s scale of 1/43 and each model carries a serial number and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

On March 25, 1935, a modified Adler Trump Junior Sport car was taken to the Avus racing circuit. The engine had been uprated to give top speed of 125 kph whilst lapping consistently at 115 kph.
The car covered around 16,000 km in seven days and six nights! On the penultimate day Paul von Guillaum joined as the fourth driver. When, after 151 hours, the trip was cancelled, the Adler still had a total average speed of 103.36 kph, breaking 13 existing world records. All of this was achieved despite a heavy snowstorm on the penultimate day of the record run. After the record run, the car was shelved by the Adler Sports Department. In 1943 the car became a casualty of the war.
The Adler Trumpf Junior was produced from 1934. It had front-wheel drive like the larger model, the Adler Trump, but an engine capacity of only one litre. In 1934 and 1935, just over 100,000 Adler Trumpf Juniors were built.

This Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 car was registered in June 1933 with a body by Touring. It was sold to an English entrant to compete in that year’s Le Mans 24 hour race, where it came third.
The car was then returned to Italy where, at some point, the original body was replaced with some fabulous Viotti coachwork. At some point, the car was shipped to Italian Somaliland and as control of that country changed hand, so did the ownership of the car. Having been moved to Kenya, the car was overhauled and repainted but the garage it was stored in was demolished by a herd of elephants. Eventually, it came to Britain where the body was replaced with a copy of the original Touring design. In 1991, it was acquired by the Keller collection, in whose care it has been restored to its former Viotti bodied glory.

The Bugatti Type 32, commonly called the Tank de Tours, was a streamlined racing car built in 1923. Four Tanks competed in the 1932 French Grand Prix in Tours. These streamlined bodied Bugattis were good competition, but the event was won by a six-cylinder Sunbeam. The best placed Tank being third, behind 2 Sunbeams.
The design was an innovative step. From front to rear, the Tank featured enclosed bodywork which formed the shape of an airplane wing. Ground clearance was kept as low as possible but still was not low enough to cope with lift formed by the wing shaped body. Much of the chassis and engine were derived from the Type 30 road car. Another innovation hydraulically assisted front brakes, again derived from the Type 29/30 and was probably a first for the racing industry.
The Type 32 was replaced after only being raced for one year. During that year little success was achieved. The press jumped on the design criticising not only the performace, but also the styling. Following the tank, Bugatti released an entirely new Type which he thought would boost sales. Little did he know that the Type 35 would become the most successful racing design in history.
