The son of a businessman, Vespasian was Roman emperor from 69 to 79.  He distinguished himself in military service and founded the Flavian dynasty.  In the confusion following Nero’s death, his troops declared him emperor.  He subsequently took his troops to Rome and defeated Vitellius to become the legitimate Emperor.  As emperor, he reformed the Roman economy, granted citizenship to many provincial inhabitants, expanded the borders of the Empire and built the Colosseum and many other public works.
