After saving the universe from Thanos and ultimately acquiring his prize, the Infinity Gauntlet, Adam Warlock finds himself on trial, judged by the very cosmic beings who supported him in the conflict. Presiding over the trial is the Living Tribunal, and the one making the case that Warlock is not fit to be the supreme master of the universe is Eternity. Eventually, the Living Tribunal rules against Warlock, and he is forced to surrender his godhood by dividing the six Infinity Gems.

Warlock travels to a nameless planetoid settled by the High Evolutionary and his remaining followers looking for comfort and advice from his old father figure. Unfortunately, he learns Wyndham was driven insane when he witnessed the birth of a Celestial and he remains incoherent and withdrawn. To make matters worse, the New Men looking after their creator are in the midst of fending off an invasion from a mysterious heavily armed enemy force. Warlock offers to confront the invaders, though the New Men find little protection with his uncompassionate attitude. Meanwhile, Pip and Drax are both captured by similarly advanced assailants.

While fighting They, Warlock's Soul Gem lashes out and absorbs the essence of one of the invaders. Through the cyborg's memories, he learns that a mysterious armored being called the Omega saved twelve people from the demise of Counter-Earth and turned them into the cyborgs of They, programming them to seek and assassinate the High Evolutionary. Before They get a chance to accomplish their task, Warlock presents himself to them, reminding them of the time he died for their sins as Counter-Earth's savior and orders them not to harm the High Evolutionary. The conflict between faith and duty in They's mechanical minds causes their heads to explode. Warlock, feeling guilty over exploiting their reverence for him, swears to take the fight to Omega to avenge them. Meanwhile, the Omega attacks Moondragon and Gamora's spaceship and uses an ultrasonic weapon to incapacitate them. He captures them just as he had Pip and Drax.

Warlock returns to the world where he assembled the Infinity Watch to find that they've all since left without a trace. Psychically contacting the holder of the Reality Gem for information, he learns that they've been abducted by the Omega and are being held in a ship above Earth's orbit. Warlock goes to infiltrate the ship and finds it manned by various soldiers in animalistic armor. He gets in a particularly fierce battle against one that boasts having defeated Warlock in the past. When Warlock eventually defeats and unmasks his opponent, he recognizes him as Triax the Terrible and realizes his master the Omega must in turn be the Man-Beast. Just then, Man-Beast appears alongside the results of his experiment to use machines to control the power of the Infinity Gems through the captive members of the Infinity Watch -- a large, monstrous creature formed of cosmic energy he calls his Infinity Thrall.

Warlock fights a hopeless battle against Man-Beast's Infinity Thrall until he realizes it only exists because the ship's machines are drawing from the Infinity Gems. He then leads the creature around so the collateral damage from the fight disables the ship's engines, dispelling the Thrall and forcing Man-Beast and Triax to flee their doomed vessel. As the ship crashes to Earth, Warlock finds he is too weak from his last gambit to manage an escape, but thankfully the rest of the Infinity Watch recovers in time to teleport everyone out. The ship falls into the ocean and explodes as the newly reunited team rests on a nearby beach.

The Infinity Watch soon realize they've ended up on Monster Isle in the Bermuda Triangle. Mole Man and a horde of giant monsters greet them, but Mole Man doesn't want them as enemies, rather he offers them the use of the island's castle as their home base in exchange for their friendship. After some assurances that the Infinity Watch will have autonomy on the island and that Mole Man's conquering days are behind him, Warlock and his team accept the offer. Before they have any chance to settle in, however, they're visited by Thanos, who has come seeking Warlock's help.

Thanos and the Infinity Watch observe a column of energy. The Titan explains it is a relay junction. Before they can trace the energy source, they must wait for his scanners to recalibrate. Thanos and Warlock briefly share their memories of holding the Infinity Gauntlet. Gamora has a sudden precognitive vision through her Time Gem. She sees Warlock crucified, and a gauntleted hand reaching towards him. Thanos and Moondragon discuss her abilities with the Mind Gem, and her complex relationship with Drax. Thanos' Doppelganger informs the Magus that the expeditionary force is on its way. Gamora tells Warlock about her psychic vision. She then spars with Thanos. Drax cannot tell if they are "really fighting, or just messing around," but in the end they smile and compliment each other. Pip and Warlock discuss the latter's lack of good and evil. Right when the team tries to depart, the expeditionary force arrives and surrounds them.
