The Zollverein colliery, also known as the "Eiffel Tower of the Ruhr Area", was a coal mine in Essen, Germany, which was active from 1851 to 1986. It was named after the German Customs Union, founded in 1834. Today it is an architectural and industrial monument. Together with the immediately adjacent Zollverein coking plant, shafts 12 and 1/2/8 of the colliery have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. Zollverein is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the location of various cultural institutions as well as the Folkwang University of the Arts.
