Piper Elizabeth Chapman is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Netflix series, Orange Is the New Black. She is based on her real-life counterpart Piper Kerman, author of the non-fiction book, Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison, upon which the series is based.

Piper Chapman is described as being the "average" girl. Prior to arriving in prison, she was engaged to Larry Boom and was charged with smuggling drugs with her ex-girlfriend, Alex Vause, which she had committed years prior. During her time in prison, Piper's initially intends to remain in the background and stay low, but eventually starts a rivalry with fellow inmate Tiffany Doggett, which triggers a series of events that causes Piper to lose her sense of "self" throughout the course of her time in prison.
