Ariel is a fictional character in Walt Disney Pictures' 28th animated film, "The Little Mermaid" (1989). She subsequently appears in the film's prequel television series (1992-94), direct-to-video sequel "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea" (2000), and direct-to-video prequel "The Little Mermaid III: Ariel's Beginning" (2008). Jodi Benson voices Ariel in all official animated appearances and merchandise.

Ariel is the seventh-born and often-rebellious daughter of King Triton and Queen Athena of Atlantica, an underwater kingdom of merfolk. In the first film, she longs to be a part of the human world. She marries Prince Eric, whom she rescued from a shipwreck, and together they have a daughter, Melody.
