Astromech droids are versatile utility robots typically used for maintenance and repair of starships and other related technology. There are a variety of small droids used throughout the Star Wars series and all are equipped with a variety of tool-tipped appendages that are stowed in recessed compartments of their frames. The R2 unit is a well known example of an astromech droid.
