Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives (June 14, 1909 – April 14, 1995) was an American musician and actor with a career that spanned more than six decades. He and his music are often associated with the Christmas holiday season, and is best remembered for voicing Sam the Snowman in the 1964 stop motion film, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. He is the recipient of many awards, most notably the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1959 for his role as Rufus Hannassey in the 1958 film, The Big Country.
