Produced by Takara Tomy of Japan and launched in 1970, Tomica (トミカ) is a line of diecast vehicles, mostly focusing on models of Japanese cars and trucks. They are thought to have originated as an accessory for Tomica World, a line of motorized trains, vehicles and buildings produced by Tomy from 1959.
The range began with six models of Japanese cars with more added later in the year. By 1978 there were 108 models available. Initially the line included only private cars, but this rapidly expanded to include taxis, buses, trucks and construction vehicles. Models in the range were numbered from 1-110, so as existing models are phased out, their numbers are reused for new models. In 1983, as a result of Tomy’s financial issues, the range was reduced to 80 models.

From the initial range produced as toys for children, Tomy has expanded the brand to include a number of collectible series featuring models of vintage vehicles with higher detail levels, aimed at collectors. They also produced the Tomica Dandy range of 1/43 scale vehicles from 1972 until 1993.
