Cleo McDowell

Coming to America | Character

Something Missing?

Cleo McDowell is the arrogant father of Lisa McDowell and a self-promoting owner of McDowell's in Coming to America. He was played by John Amos, of Good Times fame.

It may seem that he's a good guy, but he's really a ripoff in sheep's clothing. When we first see him he gives an arrogant speech about how the "misunderstandings" between his restaurant, McDowell's, and McDonald's. We first see Cleo at a Baptist-sponsered beauty pageant. He shamelessly tries to use that as an opportunity to promote his restaurant. He is also a charlatan. Throughout the movie it's pretty clear he's ripping McDonald's off for his own fortune. When a cameraman comes to his presence, afraid he'll be exposed, he tries to attack them—we don't actually see an attack, but it's pretty clear he wanted to hurt them. He also treats Maurice, one of his employees like garbage.
