The victory of Taruffi / Chinetti and the second place of Ascari / Villoresi with the Ferrari 212 Inter at the Carrera Panamericana in 1951 pushed other important manufacturers such as Mercedes, Porsche or Gordini to try their hand at this truly particular race. In 1952, in addition to the 212 Inter and 250S, Ferrari entered four new cars, three berlinettas and a spyder, set up by Vignale on the chassis of the 340 America, with a 4100cc engine equipped with new carburetors. Named 340 Mexico, the cars were managed at the Carrera Panamericana by the Ferrari importer in the United States, Luigi Chinetti, and by the Scuderia Guastalla, but the results were not what was expected. One of the 340 Mexicos was seen again at the 1953 Mille Miglia.
This was the only race the car ever ran and it did not finish.
