In this first landmark issue, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, and Ant Man form the Avengers in "The Coming of the Avengers!", Loki, having been previously captured by Thor, is being held prisoner at the Isle of Silence in Asgard; His physical form may be confined there, but by means of thought projection his disembodied self travels to Earth in search of revenge; He spots Thor in his human identity of Dr. Don Blake, but resists defeating him as it would be a hollow victory compared to defeating him as Thor; After hours of searching, Loki happens across the Hulk and devises a wicked plan to entice Blake to transform into Thor; Hours later, newspapers print articles about the Hulk being on the rampage again and a manhunt begins; The Hulk's friend, Rick Jones, reads the article with disbelief and meets with members of the Teen Brigade in order to find help to track Hulk down to find the truth; They attempt to contact the Fantastic Four but Loki interferes with the radio signal, diverting it to Don Blake; He decides to transform into Thor to help the Teen Brigade; Unknown to Loki, the radio signal is also picked up by Ant-Man, the Wasp, and Iron Man, who also travel to assist; Iron Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp pursue the Hulk to an auto factory in Detroit; Thor appears with Loki to clear Hulk's name; Suddenly Loki makes himself radioactive forcing the heroes to retreat; Luckily, Loki stands over a trapdoor and Ant-Man's ants trigger a switch, dropping him into a lead-lined tank; Upon celebrating their victory, Ant-Man and the Wasp point out how well they could work as a team, and that they should work together in future; The Wasp decides they should call themselves the Avengers, and everybody agrees.

The Avengers Battle the Space Phantom,The Space Phantom comes to Earth to defeat the Avengers; If he can, then nothing can stop his race from invading Earth. Roster includes Thor, Iron Man, Wasp, Giant Man, and the Hulk, who leaves the team at the end of the issue. Rick Jones appearance. First appearance of the Avengers Mansion.

The Avengers Meet... Sub-Mariner!, After he left them, the Avengers feel responsible for the damages that the Hulk may cause; They start a search for him and find him. When they start to battle, the Sub-Mariner joins the Hulk. Roster includes: Thor, Giant-Man, Wasp, and Iron Man. Guest appearances by the Hulk, Rick Jones, the Sub-Mariner, the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, the original X-Men, Odin, and miscellaneous Asgardians.

Captain America Joins... The Avengers!, Namor attacks a group of eskimos and throws their idol into the sea. When the ice melts, the figure trapped within turns out to be Captain America, in suspended animation since the end of World War II; The Avengers rescue Cap and return to New York. An alien figure turns our heroes to stone. When Cap and Rick Jones track him down, the alien agrees to restore the Avengers if they agree to help him recover his broken space ship in return; When doing so, the Avengers are attacked by Namor. Roster includes: Thor, Giant-Man, Wasp, Iron Man and Captain America. Rick Jones and Sub-Mariner appearances. First modern appearances of Captain America and Bucky. First appearance (shadowed cameo of face) of the first Baron Zemo.

First full appearance of Baron Zemo, and first appearance of the second Black Knight in "Masters of Evil!", Baron Zemo, the man behind the cause of Bucky's death discovers that Captain America is still alive; Collecting together the Black Knight, Radioactive Man and the Melter, the Masters of Evil are formed; While the Masters of Evil spray the city with 'Adhesive X', a powerful glue for which there is no solvent, the Avengers attack; Captain America and Giant-Man get trapped by the adhesive and the Avengers withdraw to try and find a solution for it; Wasp remembers that a criminal behind bars called Paste-Pot Pete might be able to help; After receiving the solution they free Captain America and Giant-Man, and attack the Masters again. Special bonus: The letter column in this issue leads off with a letter from Buddy Saunders, the owner of MyComicShop. Oh, for the halcyon days of our callow youth! In the letter Buddy tells Stan and Jack that Avengers #4, with the return of Captain America, was one heck of a great issue. Time has certainly proven him right!

Rick Jones dons Bucky's costume in "Their Darkest Hour!", In Asgard, the Enchantress and the Executioner are banished to Earth by Odin; There they find Zemo (who had managed to escape the authorities) and they team up with him to stop Captain America; The Enchantress' motive is to get Thor by her side; She successfully lures Thor and hypnotizes him to fight for them; Meanwhile Captain America travels to the Amazon jungle to capture Zemo; Captain America then wins against Zemo's forces and Zemo tries to escape; Captain America grabs onto to the escape ship, however; The other Avengers fight Thor and, thanks to Iron Man, bring him back to his senses; Zemo's ship flies to the Avengers battle to rescue the Executioner and the Enchantress. The Conqueror!, Kang appears and demands to be made ruler of the Earth; The Avengers attempt to stop him, but it comes down to Wasp and the Teen Brigade to slow Kang long enough for the rest of the Avengers to free themselves and put an end to Kang's threat.
