Mount Rushmore is a mountain in the Black Hills of South Dakota, United States. The mountain features a colossal sculpture called Shrine of Democracy which depicts the heads of four American Presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. The sculpture was designed by Gutzon Borglum, who oversaw construction from 1927 to 1941 with the help of his son, Lincoln Borglum.
The sculpture is built on land that was illegally taken from the Sioux Nation after the Great Sioux War of 1876. In 1980 the US Supreme Court ruled in United States v. Sioux Nation of Indians that the taking of the Black Hills required just compensation, and awarded the tribe $102 million. The Sioux have refused the money, which has grown per interest to over a billion dollars, and continue to demand the return of the land.
