This was created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Lee Petty Engineering, formed by Lee Petty in 1949, later to become Petty Enterprises. Lee Petty won 3 National championships himself, the first to do so. However, the set features the 7 won by his son Richard. Neither the cars nor the transporter is very accurate or detailed, but such was the game back then.
Before he became a NASCAR legend, Richard Petty was a young, tough-as-nails driver behind the wheels of a 1957 Olds. On July 12, 1958 - only ten days after he turned 21 - he entered his first race, driving a spare Olds from the Petty Garage. On a dirt raceway in Columbia, S.C., Petty took the track in the #42 Olds, igniting one of the most incredible careers in racing history. HOT WHEELS Racing commemorates Richard Petty's exciting early days with this classic racer from the Petty stable: a 1957 Olds sedan.
